One human family, in faith

Sunday 27th Nov. Kings Park Stadium Durban Interfaith Rally

It was a spectacular day - great disappointment though: the stadium was not even a quarter full. However, spirits were high, hopes undaunted. In a procession of religious leaders we soon walked into the Stadium to the joy and appause of all. Almost all religious faiths and life philosophies across Africa and the world were represented.

The message to the world leaders and the powers that be from about 192 countries was loud and clear - to the rich, big and powerful countries, it was said: "You may be rich, and powerful and you make the decisions. We are poor, and powerless and make no direct decisions. Yet we have Faith and the reality is - together - we and you - we are the people. The earth is our common home and there is no planet B. Destroy the earth and we all shall perish - we and you. Save our planet and we shall all live in peace and enjoy."

Arch Bishop Tutu said: "Adam lived in a garden. God intended for man to live in a garden - not in a desert."

Norway was especially commended for so generously supporting COP17 and efforts for a greener earth. But was also challenged to take on greater responsibility and do something with its own oil and gas explorations.

Perhaps not very much will be achieved immediately for an (FAB) Fair and Binding Agreement but at least the people have spoken albeit through their religious leaders.

Here in South Africa at this Interfaith rally, I cannot but see the great African spirit come back to life. In my mother tongue of Mandinka there is no distinct word for "nature". This is because nature has never been perceived as separate from man. The common word therefore is "God´s creation" which includes both man and nature.

In Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said: "All of creation are Allah´s family and the best of them are the best to His family". This was again the gist of the message today:

We are one family - the Human Family and We have faith. Act now for climte justice. Morality and ethics before econimics.
